Exclusive: NPFL’s Super Four Tournament Gets Date

The Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) has picked a date for the annual super-four tournament, an official has disclosed.

A top official of the League Management Company (LMC) said that the sports institution has fixed January 18, 20 and 22 for the super four tournament which will be played by the clubs that finished in the top four position on the league table.

However, Enyimba FC, Warri Wolves, Nasarawa and Akwa united will play the tournament. The top official further disclosed that a more attractive gift pack will be given to the winner of this year’s edition.

Speaking further about the venue for the tournament, he said: “We do not have a venue yet, we would have opted for Abuja but as you can see people will not turn up to watch the match, but right now we think Kaduna or Ilorin will be a better place because of the crowd, you know it help players as well when they have fans watching them play.

Recall that the Bayelsa United, FC Taraba, Sharks FC and Kwara united were relegated from the premiership and will now play next season in the lower National league.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is said to have proposed January as the kick-off date for the 2016 Nigerian Premier League season.

This is to enable clubs playing at the continental level prepare well ahead of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

“The league will not wait for 23 players (who will make the final squad for the CHAN) to start. We need to get going so that our clubs in the Champions League and the Confederation Cup will get some matches under their belt before their preliminary matches in February,” a top official disclosed.
