Nigeria’s minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has stated that the activities of Islamist group, Boko Haram is sponsored by highly placed corrupt Nigerians.
Mohammed made the remark at a meeting with officials of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) in the nation’s capital, Abuja yesterday, January 8.
Mohammed also solicited the support of the BON officials in the government’s on-going war against terrorism. He informed them that the new attitudinal change programme of the government was tagged: “Change begins with me”, adding that the National Orientation Agency (NOA), with offices across the 774 local government councils, will drive the campaign.
According to Daily Sun, Mohammed said the Buhari government would soon re-launch the War Against Indiscipline and Corruption, adding that proceeds from corruption end up in Boko Haram accounts.
Mohammed also opined the media cannot afford to be neutral at this time. He said: “This war against terror is our war, not the military’s war.’’
He also charged the media to assist government in disseminating security awareness campaign messages to the nooks and crannies of the country.
The minister said the idea behind the campaign was to educate Nigerians on the need to support the military in the war against the insurgents.
He informed his audience that the messages will be produced in various indigenous languages to make them reach everyone across the country.
Speaking on behalf of the group, BON Chairman and director-general of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Shola Omole, assured the minister that they will be very supportive of the government’s plans adding that “it’s only when our nation survives that we will all pursue our businesses”.
Meanwhile, as part of efforts towards fighting the current security challenge in Nigeria, the United States has donated $11 million mine-resistant and armor-protected vehicles to the Nigerian army.
