A senator representing Zamfara West, Abdullahi Adamu on Monday, January 4 2015 called for an immediate review of land administration in Nigeria stressing that it was one of the major limitation to agriculture in Nigeria.
Adamu who spoke to newsmen said that land feuds take advantage of the lands they own to exploit farmers who would have utilized such lands.
He therefore said that real farmers can have their own lands with which they can seek loans for agriculture if the Land Use Act is looked into.
“There is a need to look at land administration, because it is part of the problem of agriculture today.
“Most of the small holder farmers do not have lands of their own, and to some degree, they are surviving on the feudal land system where people have farmland, they are not cultivating it and you come, and you want it, you cannot have it,“he said.
He added that if the right links to the land is acquired, the land can be used but for a certain fee of agreement which the farmers can at least use as collateral when needed.
While speaking on the possibility of sponsoring a bill to repeal and re-enact the Land Use Act, he said that there was already a Presidential initiative from Yar’Adua’s administration to review the Act.
“It was one of the seven cardinal projects of the Yar’Adua’s government to review the land administration.
“I believe that before we can pass any meaningful agricultural policy, land administration must be part and parcel of that policy,” he said.
The senator who is the immediate past President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) said that there was need for Nigeria to increase its production capacity.
He insisted that it was only when the agricultural products were available that one could add value.
